July Playlist – Want You Back

1.Come Back Song (2010)

Darius Rucker starts off with a clever analogy of his morning coffee and the end of his relationship. He’s willing to admit he was wrong for ending the relationship and that she is doing well without him. The night seems to hit the hardest, missing her as he tries to fall asleep alone. He hopes this song will reach her and publicly humble him as he tries to win her back.

2. I Want You Back (1996)

NSYNC* brings another great bop as they sing of a mistake they’re trying to take back. He has to apologize and find a way to get her back. He reflects on how naive he was in the beginning of the relationship and the things he’d do differently now.

3. We Belong Together (2005)

Mariah Carey expresses her guilt of ending a relationship and how she misses his voice and touch. She remembers all the good times they had together and how he was such an important part of her life. Everything is reminding her of how much she misses him and how lonely she is now. The loss she feels is too great to properly explain.

4. Want You Back (2017)

HAIM sings of fearing love and therefore driving her lover away. But she’s ready to open up now and be vulnerable. She admits her mistake and will take the blame if that’s what it takes to get him back. She’s ready to commit her heart to loving him if he’ll let her.

5. What if I Told You That I Love You (2020)

Ali Gatie wonders what she could say to get her lover back. She wonders if he could possibly feel the same way she does. She’s also a bit insecure about their past and if his feelings were really true for her. She fights an uphill battle though as he has found a new love. Still she hopes she’s not alone in her feelings.

June Playlist – Break Up

1.Make You Miss Me (2014)

Sam Hunt immediately starts explaining this wishy-washy personality of a girl he’s dating or talking to. She always wants the newest things and is quick to ditch when the next big thing rolls around. Sam doesn’t deny the break up but he is convinced she caught feelings and will miss him. She won’t be able to move on to the next thing because she’s still hoping he’ll text her late at night. It seems like the roles are finally going to reverse and she’ll experience the heartbreak she’s always dishing out. Every little tiny thing is going to be a reminder of the love she lost.

2. If I Loved You (2012)

Delta Rae is a heartbreaker in this song. She wishes she loved this man the way she should and the way he deserves but those deep feelings just aren’t there. It could be such a great love and on the surface it probably is, but in her heart she truly knows it’s not enough. They are so close to happily ever after and it just breaks your heart that this relationship can’t last forever.

3. Missed Calls (2011)

The Late Mac Miller sings of a relationship in turmoil and they’re having so many problems that he doesn’t feel like they’re on the same page anymore. The catchy chorus is where the title comes from as Mac raps about the voicemails his girlfriend is leaving, saying she thinks she has to walk away from this deteriorating relationship. It seems like the relationship has changed over the years or perhaps they have changed as individuals since Mac got famous. They both wish to go back to how they were but they know that isn’t really possible anymore.

4. Burn (2004)

Usher belts out this song as this relationship burns out. He seems the end coming and it will only hurt later on to drag this relationship out any longer. The break up seems to be one sided and it really pulls at the heartstrings when you know someone is trying to hold on when the other is pulling away. The song takes a turn as Usher regrets the break up! He wishes for her back and misses the connection they had, but the relationship has already burned down.

5. Somebody that I Used to Know (2012)

Gotye had just all belting this out that summer! I had never been in a relationship at the time but boy did I feel that break up! Although, it may be a mutual break up it still hurts when you’re completely ignored and feel the person trying to erase the relationship. In a very clever use of the title, Gotye hints to a possible cheating scenario in the final verse.

May Playlist – Longing

1.My eyes adored you (1974

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons bring you this song that still pulls at the heart strings decades later. This is a song that adores a woman from afar. Childhood friends that grew up together but never showed their romantic feelings. Frankie Valli even sings of reaching fame but still thinking of the devotion he had for this childhood love.

2. Jesse’s Girl (1981

Rick Springfield sings of the feelings he begins to foster for his friend’s girlfriend. He imagines the couple’s intimate time together after seeing the love they display before him. He wonders where he could find a woman like the girlfriend and what’s wrong with him that she wouldn’t want to date him.

3. Build Me Up Buttercup (1967)

The Foundations tell the story of a man trying to win over a woman who hasn’t given him much of a chance to woo her. He hopes she’ll make time to call or visit so he could show her how he feels. This song focuses on the dilemma of receiving mixed signals. They flirt and toy with each other’s feelings but can’t commit to giving this relationship a chance.

4. Just a friend (2002)

Mario sings of his desire to get to his friend more intimately. He wants to form a deeper connection and learn about all of her successes and fears. The woman seems to be keeping his advances at bay, claiming he’s just a friend and she doesn’t share the same romantic feelings.

5. Heartless (2019)

Diplo (ft Morgan Wallen) creates a song that definitely reflects how modern dating tends to go these days. She’s all about the chase and the attention of having a guy pursuing her. He’s hoping things could change and they can truly be together but she’s taking him on a rollercoaster of emotions.

April Playlist – Crush

1.Something to Talk About (1991)

Bonnie Riatt sings of a friends to lovers storyline as the town begins to suspect romance brewing among these friends. These rumors have Bonnie evaluating her friendship and realizing she has caught feelings for her friend!

2.Losing Control (2015)

3.Yellow Hearts (2019)

Ant Saunders admires and has growing feelings for a friend but he’s worried he’s reading too far into her responses. She sends yellow heart emojis but he’s not sure if that means she likes him too. Is she playing games? Is she just a sweet girl? Saunders is trying to define the relationship, if there even is one.

4.Open (2013)

February Playlist – Desire

Valentine’s Day was last week so hopefully these songs were played to set the mood!

1.Love Faces – Trey Songz

Released in 2010 in his Passion, Pain, & Pleasure album, Love Faces has passion covered 10 times over. The song sets the scene of a couple getting together that evening, kissing touching and as the title suggests, making love faces. From undressing to messing up the bed sheets, Trey sings about it all!

2. Slow Hands – Niall Horan

Niall released this lowkey, soothing jam in 2017. The song starts with a girl wanting to take Niall home and he’s not leaving without her! Her fingertips wander his body and they both want the same thing.

3. Must be Doing Something Right – Billy Currington

From Billy Currington’s Doin’ Somthin’ Right album released in 2005. Billy sings about how different nights bring on different moods and it won’t always be the same with your partner. By her smiles and sighs, Billy has gathered he’s on the right path to pleasing her. He’s focused on making his partner happy, who doesn’t want that?

4. Close the Door  – Teddy Pendergrass

I am bringing you all way back into classic soul with this 1978 hit! This song is by Teddy Pendergrass from his Life is a Song Worth Singing album. It’s the end of a long day when a couple is finally coming together. They want to cater to each other, show each other how much they love each other, and enjoy the night together.

5. Like a Wrecking Ball – Eric Church

This song is from Eric Church’s The Outsiders album in 2014. Eric sings of finally getting home after being away for a while on tour. He wonders how well the house will hold up when they’re finally together again. There’s a hunger and an uncontrollable need displayed in this song; they’ll be in each other’s arms as soon as he’s through the front door.

6. Want to Want Me – Jason Derulo

This song is titled after Jason Derulo’s 2015 album. The song starts with Jason excited and rushing to get to this girl. He’s willing to put in the work for this girl to want him like he wants her. If a girl is interested, she’ll definitely enjoy the effort and motivation a guy is willing to put in.

January Playlist – Cheating

We have the first playlist of the 2020 series! I’m hitting the ground running here because January we’re talking about Cheating! (youtube links of the songs included!)

1.Thru your phone – Cardi b

Released in 2018 in Cardi B’s debut album Invasion to Privacy. This is a song for when you just found the proof of the lies and cheating you’d been suspicious of. The anger you feel for your partner taking you for granted and not appreciating the love and relationship you two have. The chorus then mixes in that soft pain of your heart breaking realizing your relationship is forever changed. This song takes place in the night when your partner is still asleep and you’re all alone in this heartache and betrayal.

2. Say My Name – Destiny’s Child

This song is featured on Destiny’s Child’s second album The Writings on the Wall released in 1999. This song was a total bop while I was growing up. It focuses on the first time you’re noticing your partner is acting different. They’re not being as open and affectionate as they normally are and you’re beginning to wonder if it’s because they’re with someone else. You don’t like this shady behavior and you want them to be honest.

3. The Thunder Rolls – Garth Brooks

Released in 1991 on Garth’s No Fences album, this song parallels a storm in town with the storm brewing in the relationship. She hopes it’s the storm in town that is keeping him out so late but when he does return home, it’s the storm in her heart that tells her he was out with someone else.

4. I’m Not the Only One – Sam Smith

Released 2014, In the Lonely Hour album, Sam Smith really knows how to make your heart want to break down and cry. I’m glad these lyrics mention the crazy aspect. When you start to suspect betrayal, you analyze all the conversations and actions differently. In order to try to throw you off their trail, a cheating partner will call you crazy and make you feel guilty.

5. Wasn’t Me – Shaggy

From the 2000 Hot Shot album, this song was a hit with it’s reggae flair. This is from the perspective of the cheater getting caught in the act. Shaggy includes many details of the character’s cheating and the song includes a friend’s advice to deny it all! In the end, he wants to apologize to his girl and thinks his friend is a player. But once a cheater always a cheater?

6. Irreplaceable- Beyonce

I know Beyonce was also in Destiny’s Child, already featured on this list, but this single remained at the top of the US Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 10 weeks! The song starts as a guy is getting kicked out of the house and packing up all his things, which are to the left in the closet. Through the song we gather that a guy took his partner for granted, stepped out on her, and never thought she could find someone like him again. She’s savage though, as her next guy will be there in a minute.

7. I Hope – Gabby Barrett

American Idol alumni, Gabby releases this hit in July 2019. The song starts with off wishing a couple well on finding true love. But this song finishes off our Cheating Playlist so we know that can’t be the end of the story! I love songs with a great twist and this one will have the happily married belting out these lyrics like they know this heartbreak first- hand.
